Contemporary Figurative Ceramics @ the Emerson

Contemporary Figurative Ceramics, an exhibit of cutting edge sculpture, will open at the Emerson’s Jessie Wilber Gallery on Friday, June 10, 2011 with a public reception from 5-8 pm. A gallery talk will be held at 6 pm. The group show will feature the clay sculptures of renowned regional and international artists: Monica Van Den Dool from Oakland, California, Greg Jahn & Nancy Halter of Billings, Trey Hill and Beth Lo of Missoula, Richard Notkin of Helena, Michael Sarich of Reno, Nevada, Tip Toland of Seattle, Washington, Rosalie Wynkoop of Bozeman, Kensuke Yamada of Helena.

This show is held to honor the 60th Anniversary of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, a center that attracts ceramic artists from around the world. International ceramics collectors will visit the exhibit on June 22 in a field trip hosted Steven Young Lee and the Bray Foundation.

The Emerson is fortunate to exhibit works by such an intense group of innovative ceramic artists working today. Contemporary Figurative Ceramics includes both realistic yet poignant portraiture, symbolic, abstract human and animal figures, “Day of the Dead” inspired raku skulls, press molded tiles and elaborately painted wheel thrown vessels. Some of the work is explicit in its narrative intent while others are more abstract and open to interpretation. The exhibit will be on display through August 31st.
