MORart event @ Museum of the Rockies

The Museum of the Rockies will be hosting its fourth annual MORart event in honor of all the artists who have donated their art to the Wine Classic this year. MORart, to be held on Thursday, June 2, from 7–9:30 p.m. in the Museum’s newly renovated lobby, will showcase the artists’ work and provide an opportunity to mingle with the artists themselves. Hors d’œuvres will be catered by the Emerson Grill with a no-host bar, and raffle tickets with prizes including experiences with the artists will be for sale for $1. Tickets for MORart are on sale now and are $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

“Each artist gets the opportunity to not only showcase their donated piece that will be auctioned at the Wine Classic on Saturday, July 16th, but to demonstrate their art processes, talk with event guests about their progression as an artist and selling other pieces from their collection,” said Robin Chopus, Wine Classic Co-Chair.

This year’s event will feature Honorary Artist Gennie DeWeese, a true pioneer and matriarch in every sense of the word. DeWeese has received national recognition and her work has become widely collected. Primarily an oil painter, DeWeese also worked in cattle markers, paint sticks and oil sticks, as well as drawing and woodcut printmaking, monoprints and lithographs.  Painting almost daily until she passed away at the age of 86 in 2007, Gennie’s work ethic, contagious enthusiasm and warmth is remembered just as well as her talent and passion for art.

In addition, artists including the late Freeman Butts–Painter, Tina DeWeese–Wire Sculptor, Ray Campeau–Painter, Laurel Hatch–Painter, John Juracek–Photographer, Sally Horner O’Neill–Jeweler, Stacey Herries–Painter, Russ Fry–Furniture Maker, Kirsten Kainz–Painter, Tom Thornton–Painter and Sculptor, Barb Schwartz Karst–Painter, Julie Oriet–Painter, Tyler Kimball–Glass Artist and Diane Ross–Furniture Maker, will be on hand to display their art and mingle with the attendees.

Gennie DeWeese: Solstice celebration

When Gennie DeWeese died last November, she left behind many paintings, prints, and drawings in her studio. Many of the works are destined for the Holter Museum of Art and other Montana museums, and some pieces will be kept by the DeWeese family. Some are still available for purchase. All—including a 121-ft 360-degree view of the Gallatin Valley (1985)—will be shared with the public in a grand Solstice celebration June 20-21 at the Buck Butterfield arena (11229 Cottonwood Road, south of Bozeman). Further event details will be forthcoming in June. But mark your calendars now!

This major event will require a lot of organization and preparation. Any volunteer time that you could provide would be very much appreciated. Please contact Tina DeWeese at 406-763-4920 or Josh DeWeese at 406-431-5521 (cell) or 406-586-9800 (home).
